266 266a 270 Painting from Life including a corgi

I am combining a couple of paintings in the one post. All of these 4 x 6 oils were painted from life. The first painting is of our male corgi, Throop.  He came into the studio where I was putting the finishing touches on a painting and decided to sleep. It seems that whenever you are painting a candid subject, (where no is posing but you are capturing what is happening around you) your subject always waits until you are at the decisive point of the painting and then changes position or just leaves. Throop did just that, got up moved to another part of the studio. After I finished painting, he came back and laid down in the original spot and back to sleep.

This happens with just about every subject. From people sitting at a cafe table for two hours and then suddenly get up and leave to cows in a field who will all move out of the sunlight to the shade at one time.

Here is Throop.

This next painting was started at an outdoor cafe where I had set up and was painting the scenes around me. As mentioned above, this group suddenly got up and left. I didn't see where I could go with what I had so the panel was wiped clean for another paintng.

The second painting on the panel was of four young women getting together for coffee. I began painting as soon as they sat down and quickly got the basic shapes. Then the shadows and highlights and this painting was done. They didn't leave but constantly changed positions and yes, the girl with the sunglasses was that tall.

265 Sleeping Dogs Lie 2`

I was painting outdoors on a beautiful Sunday afternoon not long ago. I was literally a couple of feet away from a sidewalk cafe, a coffee shop and bakery. Looking around for a suitable subject, I saw this pretty young lady passed out under a table. Still, you have to paint quickly and with concentration. You never know when you model will get up and move, then it's all over. Luckily, I was given plenty of time.

264 Dressage Show - Gray

"Painting from Life"  The term "painting from life" is a description for a painting done while looking at a live model as opposed to a sketch of photograph. When painting animals this often means painting from an animal in motion. (Sleeping dogs and cats are one exception.)
So setting up the easel at a dressage show, I quickly learned that to paint horses from life, I should paint at the warm up ring. Rather than going through their program and then leaving the ring, in the warm-up, there is a lot of repetition. To paint this gray, I would look, then paint while the  horse and rider came back into the same position again. Look again, paint again.  Always knowing that in an instant, the horse and rider would leave and my model would be gone. Still, it is a very good exercise in concentration, observation and painting. Starting by capturing the movement of the horse and then its form and finally suggesting details. Unfortunately, working too intensely to make a note of the rider's number...

This painting is a 5 x 7, a bit larger than most of the others in this blog.

263 Mighty Hunter

I don't know what it is about the corgi's eyes. The expression that is just a bit unreadable....adoring or accusing?

262 Ross Castle

Usually, a small painting is done as a study for a larger one. In this case, it was the other way around. I painted a large acrylic, 16 x 20 of this scene for a painting class that was being held on St. Patrick's Day. It was based on a photo sent to me by a friend whose ancestral home was Ross Castle. Small paintings need simple elegant design and so do paintings for a class. So it was only natural to add Ross Castle to the 1hundred paintings series.
Now I am thinking of looking through photos of our trip to Killarney. I did a number of watercolours while there, but the ruins of an 12th century priory on the island of Inishfallen across the lake from Ross Castle still remind me that they need painting also....

261 Sunny Afternoon

Another example of what you see on the side of the road in North Carolina. Took some photos, but the fenced in pasture was the only dry land. Slog through the marsh to get to the sunny side. Wet shoes, I think this is what the photographers call a "difficult shot"

This Rooster was painted in the middle of a number of Fox paintings, thus the name Fox Fox Fox Chicken. One of those fox paintings "Fox Eyes" is on the previous post. Could Fox Eyes and this painting be considered a matched pair?
